Event description

Jayda Wilson presents: (Un)silenced

Reflections on Growing up as an Aborigine in Adelaide, 1989 - Neva Gryzbowicz (nee Wilson). A document held in the State Library of South Australia.

The language is archival and survival, a balance of anger, grief and love. It’s act to no longer allow people to sit comfortably in their ignorance as we are told forever how to behave.

The work presented in Next Waves Kickstart Artist Work In Progress Presentation is a reflection of a reflection. A piecing together of Jayda Wilson’s Great-Grandmother’s voice and their own in a poetic (re)imagining of the missing, acknowledging how survival under the aborigines protection act has informed what survival is to the artist now.

With a short introduction by Jayda Wilson, Dominic Guerrera (Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri) will activate the space by hosting a Fire Talk.

A Fire Talk is a critical response yarning circle, that uses a simple and effective model to generate audience reflection and connection to art. Adapted by Jacob Boehme from the Perpich Centre of Arts (Canada), it allows audiences to grow, connect, question, and create shared meaning from the artwork they experience and see.

Alongside this as an offering of printed cards that will ask by-passers questions on themes of resonance and transport, experimenting with an outsider witness practice.

This event is part of a series of showings from Next Wave's 2024–25 Kickstart Program. The program supported seven individual artists and one collective to develop a project over 18 months, under the guidance of Next Wave and local mentors.
