What is Kumundar
This year KOITOYA is inviting children between the ages of 6 and 10 to experience hands-on Japanese carpentry through the construction of a wooden jungle gym. The Kumundar jungle gym structure and interactive construction activities were designed by master Carpenter Yuji Kanesada, an associate of KOITOYA. Based in Gifu, Japan, Yuji designed the program with the goal of revitalising and promoting traditional Japanese carpentry methodology to young audiences.
At an impressive 5m x 5m x 3m, this large structure will be assembled piece by piece with wooden mallets and wedges. Kids will have the chance to create, learn, and play as they help build this interactive jungle gym, experiencing the joy of hands-on construction while discovering the beauty of traditional Japanese woodcraft.
Following a brief introduction participants will be equipped with hard hats and small wooden mallets which will be used to drive pins that will lock the pre-cut joinery together according to a set plan. This activity will supervised by KOITOYA staff and volunteers.
The duration of the workshop is 90 minutes. Children will take approximately 30 minutes to assemble the structure, then once the jungle gym is complete our participants can spend some time climbing around the structure before they assist us to disassemble.
Precautions
We ask that all visitors to our workshop wear sensible covered footwear. For this structured activity our participants will be asked to remove their shoes on the foam mat area only.
For the safety of our staff and participants, and for the smooth operation of the session we ask that parents/carers remain on site and act as observers only. Staff will be on-hand to guide participants.
Helmets are provided for participants and ear plugs will be made available if requested.
