Kindling and the Providence 48 Hour Film Project are excited to bring a first-of-its-kind event!
On Saturday, September 19th, the Kindling Industry Training Studio (KITs) is holding a day of FREE workshops for local filmmakers. The workshops are led by industry professionals and offer a great opportunity to brush up on everything you need to do before you start shooting. All are welcome, but registration is required to guarantee a spot. In-person attendees will receive refreshments and lunch.
Note: Some of the modules may change time. We’ll notify filmmakers that have RSVP'd of these changes. The most valuable way to participate in this event is to plan to attend the full day.
Note: we love our early learners! High school students are welcome to attend, but must have an adult guardian with them.

9:30am - Keynote presenter Allan Neuwirth
As a producer of independent features, including the Oscar-winning Call Me by Your Name, Neuwirth has helped to shepherd emotionally resonant storytelling to the screen. He's also the co-creator (with artist/writer Glen Hanson) of the internationally syndicated comic strip Chelsea Boys, and author of several books including Makin' Toons, a behind-the-scenes chronicle of how modern animated TV shows are conceived, written, designed and produced, and They'll Never Put That on the Air, an oral history that explores how a handful of groundbreaking comedy shows in the 1970s and '80s pushed the boundaries of censorship and redefined what could be said or shown on network TV.
Over the years he's written, story edited, and/or produced dozens of popular animated TV series, including Octonauts, Rugrats, Bubble Guppies, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. This year he co-hosted a new YouTube show from Tongal called "Makin' Toons." Through conversations with the artists and decision-makers behind iconic animated films and TV shows, each episode reveals the creative process behind the medium.
He continues to develop new films and TV projects that celebrate imagination, humor, and the often beautiful chaos of being human.

11am - Workshop 01 | Debra Solomon
Debra Solomon has been creating award-winning animation since 1994, the year her first independent film, “Mrs. Matisse,” debuted in the New York Film Festival’s opening day program. “Mrs. Matisse” won the Young Lion Award at the Venice Biennale Film Festival, appeared in over 45 festivals, and won for Best Soundtrack at Annecy. Ms. Solomon directed the animation for Disney’s hit show “Lizzie McGuire” and for the theatrical release, “The Lizzie McGuire Movie” (2003), which starred the character she created, Animated Lizzy. Debra has created fifteen highly acclaimed animated shorts, and her most recent, “Little Hurts,” has been selected to appear in over forty-one festivals and won ten best animation awards. Her latest short, “Smiling Lessons,“ is in production. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

1:30pm - Workshop 02 | Ng'endo Mukii
Ng'endo Mukii is an Annie award-winning and British Animation Award nominated film director. She is most well known for ‘Enkai,’ an episode on the Disney+ animated anthology, Kizazi Moto.
At the prestigious Design Indaba conference in South Africa, she presented her talk ‘Film Taxidermy and Re-Animation,’ proposing the use of animation as a means of re-humanizing the ‘indigenous’ image; a people whose ‘real’ image is burdened with stereotypes of being the ‘Other.’
Ng’endo is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and holds a Master of Arts in Animation from the Royal College of Art in London. She is an alumni of the beautiful Berlinale Talents, the distinguished Urucu Media REALNESS Screenwriter’s Residency (South Africa), and the incredible Goethe Institute Bahia Vila Sul artists’ residency (Brazil).
Her mixed-media and inter-genre approach to filmmaking, particularly focused on the experiences of African women, gives her an incredibly unique visual language and makes her a preeminent voice in animation.
She lives and works in Boston, as a Professor of the Practice at The Museum School (SMFA) at TUFTS University.

3pm - Workshop 03 | Gina Kamentsky
Gina Kamentsky is an experimental animator and sound artist based in Providence Rhode Island. Her anxious and joyful short films blast out at twenty-four frames per second searing eyeballs and sending waves of buzz and crackle into the ether.
Over her three decade career she’s progressed through numerous forms including painting, drawing and collaging on film, Rotoscope, stop motion and Pixilation. Her sound work employs Musique concrète, sound collage, altered instruments, field recording and synthesized sound.
In many of her recent films Kamentsky focuses on her body as subject matter. Approaching her sixth decade, her films explore aging, queer identity, testing physical limitations and exploring how movement reflects a sense of self.
Sound is central to determining structure in her films. She begins the sound process by gathering found spoken elements, creating field recordings and creating sound intuitively in studio. In the editing stage, rather than matching sound and image, Kamentsky incorporates inappropriate sound and random syncing to create unexpected and ambiguous meaning.
She has exhibited her work at major festivals worldwide and has had retrospectives an the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Ottawa International Animation Festival and the Tricky Woman Animation Festival in Vienna. In 2025 she was awarded the Barbara Hammer Feminist Film Award for her film “Dead Name”.

Thanks to a grant from the RI State Council for the Arts, we can cover the cost of the venue and instructors. Food and marketing services are donated.
Why is this free?
We know filmmaking is expensive. Our goal is to help them develop their skills in order to be more capable filmmakers and part of the filmmaking workforce.
How many people can attend?
The attendance is capped at 100 people.
Will this be live-streamed?
No, this will not be live-streamed. The event will be recorded and uploaded to the Providence 48 Hour Film Project's Youtube page within a month of the event.
Can I teach?
