Event description

Kinship Systems | Lynette Riley

This 2 hr workshop with Lynette Riley will explore the complexity and sophistication of Aboriginal Kinship systems. Lynette is a Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi woman from Dubbo and Moree and is currently a Senior Lecturer at  the University of Sydney.

During this workshop you will develop a greater understanding of contemporary Aboriginal relationships and their importance in today’s social structures. The workshop will include:

  • The social structures based on Kinship within Aboriginal societies.
  • How social structures and world view differs from western world views.
  • How these differences impact upon Aboriginal people in the social systems which operate in Australia, such as through: education, health, housing, criminal justice systems and the legal system more broadly.
  • How government policies and practices have affected Kinship systems.
