Koala Cultural Immersion Workshop

Caring for koalas is about more than protecting a species - it’s about understanding their connection to Country, their importance to Aboriginal culture, and the role communities play in caring for their habitat.

Landcare is partnering with Aboriginal Community to help Landcarers deepen their understanding of koalas, Country and the knowledge that connects people, plants and animals.

Join us for a day of learning, sharing and connecting with Country as we explore the cultural significance of koalas and their important role within the landscape.

We will begin the day at the Miromaa Language and Technology Centre in Boolaroo, learning about the importance of koalas in Aboriginal culture, the significance of the species and the ways seasonal knowledge can help us understand and care for Country.

After morning tea, we will head out on Country by 4WD for a practical, hands-on experience. Learn how to identify important koala habitat trees and recognise signs of koala activity, including fresh scratches and scats.

We will also explore the important role of community in koala protection, monitoring and caring for Country, and how Landcare volunteers can contribute to protecting and restoring koala habitat.

Come with an open heart and mind, a willingness to learn, and your walking shoes!

Please note: The on-Country component includes a 1–4 km return walk over natural terrain. Participants will need suitable walking shoes and should bring water, a hat and weather-appropriate clothing.

The workshop is hosted by Hunter Region Landcare Network as part of our Aboriginal Partnerships program. Tickets are free for HRLN members. For Landcare groups 2 reps per group are permitted as places are limited and we would like to offer this to as many different groups as possible.
