Event description

We welcome you to a day surrounded by lush koala habitat, learning about koala ecology, how to record information about koalas and how to become a koala advocate!

LIMITED TICKETS - BOOKING ESSENTIAL

We are thrilled to support the incredible community efforts already underway by funding a training day with koala experts. Filling every seat will ensure the community gets the most out of this valuable opportunity. Given that places are limited, please commit to attending if you book. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, we kindly ask you give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your place to someone else.

This training day is tailored for adults and welcomes participants aged 14 and above. Attendees under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

About SBKN

The Sydney Basin Koala Network (SBKN) has been established by the Total Environment Centre and WIRES to create a collaborative and supportive network for koala advocates across the region. Our overarching aim is to protect and expand connected, thriving Koala core habitats and corridors across the Sydney Basin.

CITIZEN SCIENCE TRAINING DAY

When: Saturday 16 November - 10 am - 4 pm

Where: Mt Riverview Girl Guides Hall, Mount Riverview

The purpose of this training day is:

  1. To give you a better understanding of koalas, the threats they face and potential for advocacy, why data is collected and how it is used, and to give you the knowledge and skills to record key data about Sydney Basin Koalas that will contribute to their conservation.
  2. Be a space where community groups and individuals already doing koala conservation can come together, to share experiences and on ground knowledge of local and neighbouring koala populations. Expanding the network of koala advocates across the Sydney Basin creates a stronger voice for koalas.

There will presentations from koala experts from Biolink and Science for Wildlife, and you’ll have a chance to practise the skills you have gained in a short outdoor session in the bush a few mins walk from the venue. We will provide morning tea, please bring a reusable mug for tea and coffee and please bring a packed lunch.

Whether you are a regular koala spotter or have never seen a wild koala before, this training day is a chance to learn from experts and each other, and develop the skills to become a Koala Citizen Scientist and Advocate for Koalas.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Packed Lunch
  • Reusable coffee cup and water bottle
  • Mobile phone (we will be using an app to record data)
  • Sturdy enclosed shoes and sun protection for a short outdoor session
