Kojonup Open Gardens

This event is part of the 2024 Great Southern Treasures Bloom Festival presented by WCP Civil.

Kojonup is delighted to enter 4 interesting and contrasting gardens as part of the Bloom Festival in 2024 and we look forward to welcoming you into town to view them. Two completely new “Open Gardens’ are included in Kojonup’s programme this year, both of which are stunning in their own right. One is mature at 60 years of age and the ‘baby’ is just about to celebrate its 4th birthday. The young garden illustrates that with an ‘eye’ for design and great planting just how much can be achieved in a short time. Two gardens have been open before, but have new plantings and features to discover and explore.

Garden 1 - La Hacienda

This stunning garden is a labour of love and testament to the ingenuity and creativity of its owner who has masterfully stitched together an eclectic mix of plants bursting with colour, texture and form. Each plant has been carefully selected for its resilience and beauty. The garden is a rich tapestry reflecting the artistic vision of the owner and their deep understanding of gardening in difficult conditions. This Kojonup garden continues to march to the beat of its own drum and draws visitors from throughout Australia and overseas, with several new garden rooms added since 2023 including some stunning new mosaics. *this garden will close at 3pm on Saturday 

Garden 2 - An Imaginative and Meticulously Designed Young Garden

Responding to the drying climate this fledgling cacti and succulent garden was planted recently following a massive water bill received by the owners when they first emigrated from the Philippines to Kojonup. Plantings are harmonious blends of plants carefully selected for their visual and sculptural value, interspersed with judicially placed pots and repurposed vessels. Several of the original trees have been maintained creating texture, shape, interest and colour, whilst providing shade for sitting. From the clever use of repurposed materials to the thoughtful selection of drought resistant plants, this Kojonup garden is a shining example of how creativity and passion can transform a blank canvas into a personal oasis even in the face of a challenging climate.

Garden 3 - An Oasis for Birds and a Surprising Gem

This garden will surprise and delight you at every turn, 59 years in the making it is situated in the heart of town. Following their marriage the owners moved into their new home and immediately set to work transforming their plot of half an acre into an oasis for birds and in particular the Blue Wren. Every corner reveals a new ‘garden ‘room’ to discover and explore, revealing hidden gems and is the perfect place for a game of hide and seek. It is quite easy to become disorientated in this lush and abundant oasis.

Garden 4 - Glenlossie Homestead

This homestead is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Kojonup but has had a chequered past and many uses since it was built in 1846. As a result the garden of this magnificent house is fairly new and began its latest re-incarnation as a blank canvas in 2004 when its current owner purchased the property. An agricultural research station throughout the 1940’s it gradually fell into disrepair and sat forlornly on the side of the Albany Highway, looking unloved until its savior, the present owner came along and rescued this sad and unloved building. The old gardens had been cleared to form an acre paddock complete with grazing sheep to keep the grass down. Lovingly restored to the highest standards it is unrecognizable today, set in new colourful gardens, incorporating a few of the original surviving plants, including a now glorious and scrambling deep pink Bougainvillea inviting attention, as well as a once sparse, but now hedged cotoneaster and a beautifully sculpted and magnificent pine.
