Event description
Kupu: Ngā Ringa Tuhituhi - A festival to celebrate Māori writers - past, present, and future.
The week-long festival will invite people to travel around Rotorua to places including Te Papaiōuru (Ngāti Whakaue, Ōhinemutu), Tarimano (Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Awahou), Tamatekapua (Ngāti Whakaue, Ōhinemutu), Te Pākira (Whakarewarewa), and Te Tākinga Marae (Ngāti Pikiao, Mourea) alongside McLeods Booksellers Ltd., Te Aka Mauri - Rotorua Library and the Rotorua Arts Village to form the literary trail of the festival.
The carefully curated programme also includes celebrations of early Māori writers such as Te Rangikāheke, Makereti Papakura, and Te Kōkau Himiona Te Pikikōtuku, as well as an evening for Mōteatea, a panel of our favourite fiction writers, academics and research panels, and two publishing workshops over the weekend. This festival can be attended by everyone - readers, established writers, upcoming writers, book lovers, young people, and the wider community.
