Event description

Have you ever wondered what language to use when you talk to or write about people with disability?

Do you know the difference between person-first and identity first language?

Are you looking for an easy reference guide that you can use in your work or life?

The language that we use to describe and discuss disability has a significant impact. It can change the way that members of the disability community feel - for better or worse, and it also influences the attitudes and understanding of people in the broader community.

Join the team at JFA Purple Orange as we introduce our Language Guide, which has been recently updated based on extensive feedback from the South Australian disability community and our wider network.

The Guide aims to support respectful and inclusive language choices when discussing and describing disability. It reflects the preferences of the community, emphasising the importance and validity of both person-first (e.g. "person with disability") and identity-first (e.g. "disabled person") language choices.

In this session we will:

  • provide an overview of the Language Guide
  • give examples of how and when to use language
  • let you know where you can access the Guide
  • answer any questions you may have

Who should attend?

  • People working in community organisations, government, and business who want to respectfully describe and discuss disability
  • People with disability
  • Anyone with an interest in this work

Registrations close 5pm ACDT, Friday 18 October 2024. For registrations after the closing date please contact media@juliafarr.org.au.
