Event description

Free Film Event: Beneath the Southern Waves – Stories of Tasmania's Ocean Communities.

Thursday October 31st, Macquarie House, Launceston, 6pm

Join us for an extraordinary evening of short films that highlight the unique connection that Tasmanians have with their oceans and the marine life that live here like whales, dolphins, tuna and precious kelp forests. The films weave together the stories of Tasmanians such as fishers, sailors, surfers, scientists, and commercial divers , whose lives are intertwined with the ocean.

Our feature film, Beneath the Southern Waves, captures the stories of Bridget de Lange, commercial dive business owner who has a passion for giving back to the ocean from which she makes her living, and Professor Neville Barrett whose fascination for Tasmania’s oceans is lifelong.  In another film, we also meet father and son fishers Rob and Tim Cunningham who speak of the changes they’ve witnessed in their lifetimes.

Through captivating personal accounts and stunning visuals, these films offer glimpses into the experiences and challenges faced by the people who are united by a love of what lies beneath the waves intertwined with the ocean. Their stories reveal the profound bond between the ocean and Tasmania’s coastal communities.
