Launch: First Nations Public Art Commission

Join us on Wednesday, 1 October at 5pm for the unveiling of a major new commission by Trawlwoolway multidisciplinary artist Edwina Green, created as part of Moonee Valley City Council’s First Nations Playable Public Art Commission and The Playground Project Melbourne. This soft launch marks the first opportunity to experience this child-friendly outdoor sculpture, which invites movement, imagination, and connection to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country.

Central to the design are references to traditional baskets and oysters. Oysters carry Country in their shells and speak to the continuous relationship between First Nations people, land, and waterways. The sculpture’s soft, curved form echoes the shapes of woven basket vessels used for gathering, holding, and carrying knowledge. Inspired by the stories and ecosystems of the Maribyrnong River, and the significance of oysters to coastal and saltwater mob, this work honours the deep cultural and environmental significance of this place.

Located outdoors at Incinerator Gallery, where it will remain on display until mid-2026, the sculpture invites children and families to play, explore, and form meaningful relationships with Country through art and storytelling.
