The First of Its Kind: Our Movement's History, Told by Us
The timeline is the first of its kind, documenting the history of the Australian mental health consumer movement. Spanning over nearly two centuries, it captures the organisations, legislation, inquiries, publications, and pivotal moments that shaped the rights-based, consumer-led mental health sector we have today.
Nothing About Us Without Us
Consumer movements don't emerge from nowhere. They are built by people — often working against enormous resistance, with little recognition — whose courage and persistence changed policies, laws, and lives. This timeline makes that story visible, preserving it for future generations of advocates.
A History STILL Being Written — By US
The timeline was developed by Alliance staff and consumer advocates, drawing on primary sources, published academic and organisational histories, oral histories, parliamentary records, and sector consultation. It is a living document -open to correction, addition, and ongoing community contribution.
