About the Natural Hazards Atlas for Tasmania: mapping natural hazards to build disaster resilience and preparedness project 

Information about natural hazards is essential in a changing climate. Decision-making to reduce current and future exposure to natural hazards risk requires detailed data that is relevant at a local scale and accessible to a range of users. Such locally relevant and accessible hazard information is currently limited in Tasmania. Where it exists, it may be highly technical and, therefore, often not fully utilised in decision-making. ​This presents a barrier to risk planning and resilience-building.  

To fill this information gap, the Climate Futures research group at the University of Tasmania is creating a Natural Hazards Atlas for Tasmania: mapping natural hazards to build disaster resilience and preparedness. Supported by the National Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Ready Fund, the project will provide comprehensive information on a range of natural hazards, all of them closely associated with changes to our current climate. 

A resource available to all 

The project will create an information platform where data and resources are made available at locally meaningful scales across Tasmania. This information will be accessible to all Tasmanian stakeholders through a searchable, open-access website, a smartphone app, and other resources. Community consultation will inform the format of the atlas and associated hazard information. 

Launching the Natural Hazards Atlas project
