One of the enormous challenges in Asia, currently the fastest growing economy in the world, is to accelerate the development of leaders who can scale innovation and strategically adapt in the transition era. The charge for leaders to orchestrate creative and collaborative efforts to build effective and inclusive organizations is no doubt urgent and important. Yet there is a notable lack of leadership talent and steady leadership pipelines that could deliver on strategic priorities and produce real, significant impacts in the region.
The challenge is exacerbated by the deficit of evidence-based practices within ever-growing leadership development industry in Asia. At the same time instilling more academic grounding into leadership development efforts, primarily because the science of leadership development is behind and somewhat detached from the more well-documented knowledge of what constitutes effective leadership. The pedagogical question of how one learns to be an effective leader, and how the management of that learning can be accelerated, remain largely unaddressed. Â
Another perennial challenge in leadership development is the underemphasis of context. Studies premised on models and measurements developed in the West using data from one or more countries in Asia, which constitutes the majority of leadership studies pertinent to Asia, often lead to under- or misrepresentation of the rich heritage, philosophy, traditions, and cultures found within the region. Rigorous efforts to study leadership development approaches indigenous to each country are key to deal with the context-deficient theory of leadership development.
In light of the above challenges, the 3rd Lead in Asia Conference invites submissions from scholars in Leadership, Management, Organizational Behavior, Human Resources, and other cognate disciplines. The submissions can be based on theoretical or empirical investigations using any methodology on topics pertinent to leader and leadership development. More general submissions on Management-related topics will be considered insofar it has implications on leader or leadership development.
Apart from refereed paper presentations, two key programs will be featured in the conference, namely: (a) Professional Development workshops (PDWs) for early- and mid-career researchers on research methodologies to upskill and build confidence of academic staff to publish in top-ranked journals, and (b) Leadership development workshops for corporate practitioners.
