Wed, 10 Dec, 11am - 12pm AWST

Event description

We have developed the Lead Local series of workshops because, here at Regional Development Australia Goldfields Esperance, we believe that building community capacity and developing the skills of our leaders is crucial to the social and economic development of our region.

For our third Lead Local workshop, we have teamed up with regionally based consultant Simone Pickering, from The People & Culture Office, to deliver a no-fluff, real-world workshop focused on the people side of our regional organisations.

HR for Non-HR People: Not-for-Profits

Leading a not-for-profit means wearing a lot of hats — and HR is often one of them.
This 1-hour session gives GMs, administrators, Presidents, and committee members the clarity and confidence to manage employment law and people decisions the right way.

You don’t need to be an HR expert — but you do need to understand what compliance looks like, where risk hides, and how to create fair, lawful processes that protect your people and your organisation.

Together, we’ll cover the HR essentials every NFP leader needs to know:

🧭 What We’ll Cover

  • Understanding the Fair Work and WA IR systems:
Know which one applies to you, and why it matters for pay, contracts, and compliance.

  • Awards, the NES, and employment obligations:
The non-negotiables every employer must meet — regardless of funding.

  • “Subject to funding” — what it really means:
Why funding shortfalls don’t override employment law, and how to handle grant-based roles lawfully.

  • Fixed and maximum term contracts:
What’s changed under the new rules, when exemptions apply, and how to link contracts correctly to government funding.

  • Psychosocial hazards and workplace culture:
How to meet your WHS duties by asking, “What does it feel like to work here?” — and why alarm bells should be ringing if you’re on a committee or board and have never asked that question.

  • Ending employment the right way:
What procedural fairness actually looks like — and why skipping a step can land you in trouble.
Includes an interactive activity unpacking real Fair Work cases where employers got it wrong.

🧩 What You’ll Walk Away With

  • A clear understanding of your legal responsibilities as a committee or manager

  • The ability to identify red flags and compliance gaps in your organisation

  • Practical steps to manage risk and support fair decision-making

  • Insights from real case studies showing what happens when process breaks down

🎯 Why It Matters

Non-profits are built on trust, goodwill, and purpose — but those alone won’t keep you compliant.
This workshop bridges the gap between
doing good and doing it lawfully, helping your organisation create a safe, fair, and respectful workplace that stands up to scrutiny.

As places are limited, RSVPs are essential so please book your ticket today!
