LEADING WITH EMOTIONAL AGILITY –unhook from self-defeating emotions
Uncomfortable thoughts and feelings are generally not welcomed in the contemporary workplace. Leaders are
expected to be stoic, eternally optimistic and project confidence. Our emotions can ‘hook’ us and
unexpectedly show up with behaviour contrary to the leader we strive to be. Being human means that we have
an inner stream of thoughts, feelings and stories that include criticism, doubt and fear. That is the job of
the human brain – trying to make sense of the world, anticipate and solve problems and avoid potential
pitfalls. Leaders who are hooked by their stories and emotions:
- Are unable to let go of being right
- Remain silent when they know something is going wrong
- Engage in backhanded comments about colleagues or projects
- Rely on assumptions or stereotypes about colleagues
Emotionally agile leaders understand their emotions are data. They can unhook from self-defeating emotions and remain composed and centred and are able to maintain a calm focused perspective. Learning from mistakes and accepting failure is part of the innovating and experimenting in the current, complex context.
To truly ‘show up’ as the best version of yourself at work means making room for and labelling your thoughts and emotions and seeing them for what they are: information rather than facts or directives.
This highly practical Leadership Masterclass will allow you to leave with leadership strategies to develop emotional agility:
- Recognising emotions as data not directives
- Get to know your emotions and increase emotional literacy
- Tools and frameworks for working with emotions
- Steps for leading with emotional agility
