Description

Most leadership development starts after promotion, once an officer already holds rank and formal authority. By then, habits, credibility, and reputation are already set, for better or worse. Agencies lose good officers to promotional opportunities elsewhere long before they ever get the chance to develop them into leaders.

Leadership Before the Badge Changes closes that gap. This course gives officers the practical leadership skills to influence peers, model professional behavior, and prepare for promotion long before a title changes anything. Agencies use it as a succession-planning tool to build a stronger, more promotion-ready bench.

The course is led by Capt. Michael P. Evans, Ph.D., a senior law enforcement executive with more than 5,500 combined hours of instructional experience in leadership and criminal justice education. Evans built this four-hour live online course around four practical blocks: leadership versus position, personal accountability, influence without authority, and preparing for promotion. Participants leave with a clear framework for building credibility and influence on shift, whether or not they currently hold rank.

What You Will Learn

  • Distinguish rank from real influence, and understand why officers actually choose to follow someone

  • Build personal accountability, credibility, and a professional reputation that outlasts any one shift

  • Lead peers and mentor newer officers effectively without relying on formal authority

  • Handle difficult coworkers and workplace conflict using proven communication techniques

  • Sharpen the decision-making, initiative, and organizational awareness that promotion boards look for

  • Apply this training as a succession-planning tool to retain your agency's highest-potential officers
