Event description

COMPOST, WORM FARM AND BOKASHI WORKSHOP ONLINE

GET AROUND 50% OFF A COMPOST BIN, WORM FARM OR BOKASHI AND LEARN HOW TO REDUCE YOUR FOOD AND GARDEN WASTE TO LANDFILL.

AVAILABLE TO HASTINGS RESIDENTS ONLY.

We’re collecting a $10 deposit to attend this online workshop, once attended this $10 can be used towards the purchase of your compost bin, worm farm or bokashi.

Environment Centre Hawke's Bay in partnership with Hastings District Council want to keep organic matter out of landfill for a number of reasons: When it degrades, it produces methane - a greenhouse gas 23 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. It also takes up valuable space and filling our landfill faster means we will have to find another place to bury our rubbish much sooner than expected.

Composting organic waste is a way better option to deal with it, it is a virtuous cycle of returning the organic material to feed Papatūānuku rather than damage it.

Why is Hastings District Council subsiding home-composting?

To help inform the Napier and Hastings Joint Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP), the two Councils undertook a survey of household and commercial waste collected and disposed of in our transfer stations and landfill.

HDC found that about 50% of what was in our bins was food or garden waste that could be composted.

How do I get my hands on a subsidised bin/farm/Bokashi?

To receive a voucher for a subsidised system, you will need to attend a short workshop hosted at the Environment Centre. HDC can only issue one voucher per household, although two members of the household are welcome to attend the talk.

After attending the work, the Environment Centre team will ask you to do three quick surveys at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after the purchase. This will help us see how successful the scheme has been at diverting organic waste from landfill and whether households have continued to use the bins.

We also have an onsite expert that can help you trouble shoot any challenges you encounter.

The scheme is for Hastings residents only and we will ask you to provide proof of address at the workshop.

What will the workshop cover?

The workshop is a beginner’s guide on how to use a traditional compost bin, a worm farm and the Bokashi bucket system to ferment food waste. It will give you enough information find the right system for you and your whānau and get started at home. The Environment Centre will provide on-going support after the workshop.

Why do I have to pay a deposit, I thought the workshops were free?

Unfortunately due to poor attendance of previously fully booked workshops we are having to charge a deposit. With limited number of spaces available we want to ensure that spaces are given to those who are committed to turning up.

We do understand that circumstances change, so please let us know if you can no longer attend so that we can re-book you in for a later date.

So how much will I still need to pay?
