Learn to capture and create 3D models with your drone!
Event description
Join Red Dirt Robotics for two days of hands-on learning, where aspiring drone operators will dive into the exciting worlds of photogrammetry and autonomous flight mapping! Over two action packed mornings, students will discover how drones capture and create 3D models of real-world locations -Â a technique essential in fields like archaeology, urban planning & surveying, mining, agriculture, environmental conservation just to name a few!
Under the expert guidance of Red Dirt Robotics founder Jameson Harvey, students will learn the essential laws and regulations for flying drones in Australia, develop basic flight skills for safe operations, create autonomous flight paths, and capture and process data to build 3D models and maps! Each student will leave with their own 3D model to share with family and friends, and the skills to make many more! For participants 16 years and older, Jameson can even help you obtain your Commercial Remotely Piloted Aircraft operators accreditation!
This workshop not only introduces kids to drone piloting and safety but also builds real-world tech skills in data processing and 3D modelling that are in demand across many fields. Students will also get a taste of potential career paths in engineering, environmental science, and technology. With group learning and teamwork activities, students will have a chance to build confidence, make friends, and learn in a fun, supportive environment!
This program runs over two days from 9:00am-12:30pm Thu Jan 14 & 9:00am-12:30pm Fri Jan 16 at the Peregian Digital Hub. Students must be present for both days .
Participant ages:
This program will be best suited to students aged 12+. Younger students will be accepted on a case by case basis - contact Jameson to learn more. Experience is welcome, but not required.
What you will need:
1. Participants will be required to bring their own drone, preferably from the DJI ecosystem. If you own a non DJI drone, please contact Jameson prior to booking to ensure its compatibility. ALL FLYING WILL BE DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK TO YOUR EQUIPMENT.
If you do not own a drone, you may wish to attend the program with a friend who does, and participate together. Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a drone yourself, allowing you to not only continue developing your skills in the future, but also set you up to begin your journey as a drone pilot! My recommendations for a good starting point include the DJI Mini 3, DJI Mini 4 Pro, or the DJI Mavic 3 Classic. (Christmas is coming up soon!)
2. As well as the drone, it is recommended to have at least 1 spare battery, fully charged before arrival - BOTH DAYS. Additionally spare propellers won't hurt either!
3. A hat, water bottle and packed lunch/snack will also be needed.
4. A laptop will be needed on both days of the program, students may bring their own device, or request to borrow a laptop from the Red Dirt Robotics fleet prior to the event. Students will also require access to an email address in order to create necessary accounts for the mapping tools we will be utilising.
