Event description

This orientation is required for anyone who is interested in volunteering with students in Grades 6, 7 or 8, one-to-one, at a CSV Learning Center program in the Cambridge Public Schools. Middle school tutors are matched by CSV staff to an individual student for ongoing academic assistance and mentoring. CSV's middle school staff will provide coaching and support to tutors throughout the school year.

This orientation session covers school and program information and begins the tutor training process.  We will share information about the CPS student community and CSV's volunteer expectations. Finally, we will answer questions about the application process.

After reviewing your application and references, CSV staff will follow up with next steps and potential start dates based on your schedule and our program needs.

If none of the upcoming sessions work for your schedule or there are no more available dates, please contact me by email at aivanier@cpsd.us

Returning volunteers should not register for this training.

FAQs About Volunteering

What is the time commitment? Volunteers give just over one hour per week for a minimum of three and a half months.

When are volunteers needed? Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday afternoons, 3:20–4:30 p.m.

Who are the students? Students in Grades 6–8 in the Cambridge Public Schools attend one of the four middle schools or the city's one K–8 school, Amigos School/Escuela Amigos. The students in these schools are from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our tutoring program is tailored for students who can benefit from additional assistance.

Can I help if I’ve never worked in a school? Yes! You do not have to have prior experience as a tutor or teacher. We will work to match your talents with a need in the schools.

Do I need to provide references or have a CORI check? Yes. We will also need an image of a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) for a CORI (criminal record) check. You must also provide two completed reference forms  You will also need to submit documentation of COVID-19 vaccination and other vaccinations. Links to the required forms are embedded in the online application.
