What to expect
We know water is life. But what if our connection to water is about more than keeping people, plants and animals hydrated and healthy? What if water plays a much bigger role in keeping our whole planet alive and well?
In this session, we’ll explore the bigger story of water, drawing on the latest science and practical resources to build your water literacy and deepen your understanding of our most precious resource.
You’ll discover new ways to talk about water, connect with the challenges and possibilities in your own community, and explore how water education can inspire hope and agency.
With National Water Week making a splash across Australia each year, it’s a timely opportunity to think about how we use, value and care for water. National Water Week brings communities and organisations together to explore water issues, celebrate innovation and imagine practical solutions for a sustainable future.
At the heart of The Story of WaterShip is a message of hope, agency and local possibility: there is a role for all of us in the story of water.

Cynthia Mitchell AO
Once upon a time Cynthia was an engineer, a scientist, and an educator. For a long time now, she’s been leading transdisciplinary projects across Australia and around the world, aimed at getting to better together – better for those here now, and for those who will follow us. She feels privileged to be Chair of The Peter Cullen Trust for Water and Environment, Professor Emerita at UTS, and a member of the national Community Directors Council. These days she offers strategic and futures advisory, executive and leadership development, and coaching. Cynthia’s always up for some time in the bush and a good yarn/book/meal/wine.
Jenny Hiller
Jenny Hiller is the Content and Education Lead at the Australian Water Association, where she leads National Water Week and broader water literacy initiatives. She began her career as a secondary Mathematics and Science teacher before moving into the water sector, spending more than a decade at Yarra Valley Water developing and delivering education and community engagement programs. That experience sparked an enduring interest in how people understand water – not simply as a service that comes from the tap, but as a system that connects communities, environments, industries and everyday life. Jenny is passionate about making water literacy practical, accurate, engaging and relevant for learners of all ages.
