Learning Experience Design Lab
Description
Bring your learning objectives. Design the journey that brings them to life.
You want your learners to do more than turn up. You want them to think, contribute, make discoveries and use what they learn.
Whether you’re a learning designer, academic, educator or facilitator, you’ve probably felt the gap between what you hoped a workshop, course or program would achieve and what learners actually experienced.
How do you turn worthwhile learning objectives into a journey that helps people get there?
When we start with “What content do I need to cover?”, it’s easy to end up with packed slides, disconnected activities and too little time for learners to make sense of what matters.
We do more of the work. The same voices contribute. And an engaging session doesn’t always translate into learning people can use.
What if we started with a different question?
What do learners need to experience, explore and practise to make the change we’re hoping for?
How can we engage their heads, hearts and hands?
In this two-day, hands-on lab, you’ll experiment with key tools and frameworks from the Alkimia toolkit to transform your learning objectives into a purposeful learning experience.
You’ll explore how to:
Map the journey with Learning Arches: establish the conditions for learning, sustain people through challenge and bring the experience to a meaningful close.
Shape the experience across the 5Es: consider what people need to feel, think and do as they move through the experience.
Make space for everyone with Liberating Structures: design interactions that get learners doing more of the thinking and creating meaning together.
You’ll experience these approaches as a learner, unpack the design choices behind them, and test how they could work in your own context.
Bring a real workshop, course or program and the objectives you want it to achieve. It can be something you’re starting, something that needs refreshing, or something that hasn’t quite delivered what you hoped.
You don’t need a finished design or prior experience with these tools. If you have done the Kaospilot Masterclass Part 1 this is an opportunity to dive deeper into learning arches and other complimentary approaches.
Across the two days, you’ll sketch, experiment, get feedback and refine your ideas alongside other people who care about learning. You’ll focus on a manageable part of your project while considering how it fits into the wider journey.
You’ll leave with a clearer design direction, a prototype of a key part of your learning experience, and practical tools you can keep using.
Choose one learning experience you want to make better. Bring its objectives, your knowledge of the learners and your willingness to experiment to the two-day Learning Experience Design Lab.
Give yourself two days to rethink the experience and design what your learners need to move forward.
