ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS

** Paulo Magalhães

Paulo will discuss the legal structural roots of the climate emergency, and provide an introduction to how we can rethink responsibility for our shared commons. He discusses a new approach to recognising the legal status of the Earth system that will enable us to tackle climate change together - the 'Earth condominium’ concept.Paulo is the Founder and President of "Common Home of Humanity".

Paulo is a Jurist and researcher at CIJE - the Centre for Legal and Economic Research, at the University of Porto, Portugal. In 2007, he published "The Earth Condominium: From Climate Change to a New Juridical Conception of the Planet". In 2016, he was co-editor of the "SOS Treaty - The Safe Operating Space Treaty: A New Approach to Managing Our Use of the Earth System".

** Ana Barreira

Anna Barreira will address the topic: "International Environmental Law and the Earth System". In her talk she will address the following questions:Is international law in line with the Earth System functioning? Has international law evolved in such a manner to take it into consideration? Her presentation will analyze the sovereignty of States and how it has evolved to answer those questions. In addition, it will review fundamental principles of international environmental law to understand whether they accommodate to the functioning of the Earth System.

Ana is the Director, International Institute for Law and the Environment and a Director on the Board of the "Common Home for Humanity"
