Event description

During Harmony Week we'd love you to join us for a conversation about anti-discrimination and inclusion in volunteering.  This free workshop will be delivered in partnership with Office of the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.

Harmony Week is a national celebration that recognises our diversity with the ethos that Everyone Belongs. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. This week also marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and we all have a part to play in building a more inclusive society, free from racism and intolerance.

During this session you'll discover information about your rights and responsibilities under Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Law, what you can do if you observe or experience discriminatory behaviours, the reporting mechanisms available, and the Commissioner's role, purpose, and function.

We'll also provide an overview of the work Volunteering Tasmania are doing to support volunteer-involving organisations to be more inclusive and accessible.

This workshop will include an interactive session which encourages your questions and active participation as we discuss challenges facing volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations, as well as ways we can successfully overcome these challenges.

Your hosts:

Ruth Osborne - Volunteer Management Activity Tasmanian Projects Coordinator at Volunteering Tasmania. Ruth has worked in community development for 25 years with a life-long commitment to helping create a better world though diversity and inclusion, as well as environmental sustainability projects.

Davan Ong - Community Engagement and Education Officer at Office for the Anti-Discrimination Commissioner.  Dave has over 20 years of experience working with and training individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. His interesting background includes being a music performer, educator, and hospitality operator, and he is currently focused on community services.
