Event description

Let’s Get Prepared is a series of workshops and resources to help you navigate the challenges of disaster planning. Presented regionally by Museums & Galleries of NSW for museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural organisations as well as others in the cultural sector, the workshop is tailored to the region. It covers traditional disaster planning as well as theory, practical examples, cost and resource effective measures and focuses on collaboration and networking.

This workshop is a follow up to the one held in April 2024 and will check in with how organisations are going, troubleshoot issues that may have arisen and dedicate the afternoon to learning hands on salvage skills.

If you didn't attend in April you are still welcome to come along just indicate when booking so we can ensure you have access to the material and resources already covered.

Following the workshop you are invited to join us for networking drinks to catch up with colleagues, celebrate achievements and toast the end of the year

DRAFT WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
11.00am — 1.00pm Disaster Preparedness Plans review and next steps — Presenter Tegan Anthes, Collections Care Conservator

Many historical societies will be discovering that drafting their Disaster Preparedness Plan is quite an undertaking. This session will continue to support your progress as Tegan will provide an overview of the steps and encourage discussion around Disaster Preparedness.
This session aims to review the previous session and check in on the status of your Disaster Plan progress. There will be opportunities to discuss stumbling blocks, networks, resources and supplies. This is a great opportunity to build your relationship with Tegan.
1.00pm — 1.45pm Lunch

1.45pm— 4pm Disaster recovery and salvage theory, techniques and practical skills — Presenter Tegan Anthes, Collections Care Conservator

Recent floods and bushfires have again highlighted the importance of post-disaster recovery for affected museums. This year has also seen severe weather, which poses yet more risk to our museums. The impacts of these disasters can be far-reaching. Museums recovering from them are acutely aware of the need for skills and techniques to recover and salvage their collection and buildings after the event.
This session provides practical skills for recovery and salvage. The session will focus on practical skills using real objects - please bring along some objects to salvage.
