Description
GET READY TO LEVEL UP!
Ever wanted to make a game but lacked the time and motivation and didn't know all the skills? Our fourth annual "Level Her Up: We Can Build It!" game jam is for you!
This FREE beginner-friendly event will take place in person at Fortescue in the Perth CBD on November 7th and 8th. With a central location that's easily accessible by public transport and plenty of paid parking nearby, getting to the venue is easier than ever!
All 18+ women and non-binary individuals across Australia interested in hands-on game development practice are encouraged to attend, regardless of experience level or background! If you're participating in person, you must bring your laptop (and charger!) if you're making a digital game. Board and card games are also welcome!
At the game jam, you will form a team with other like-minded women to collaboratively design and develop a small game based on a proposed theme over the course of the weekend. Experienced game development mentors will be available on both days to answer questions. Games created during the game jam will be showcased at the end of the game jam! Plus, you'll have the opportunity to showcase your finished game at Let's Break Games the following weekend!
We strongly encourage everyone to attend in person! A big part of the game jam is meeting like-minded people, learning from experienced mentors, and building connections within the local game development community. With this year's event taking place right in the Perth CBD, it's easier than ever to join us!
While online participation is available for those who can't attend in person, we'd especially love to see everyone at the venue for team formation on Saturday morning (9:00am) and game presentations on Sunday afternoon (3:30pm). You're welcome to work remotely between these sessions if needed, but we encourage you to spend as much of the weekend with us as possible!
RSVP for the Community Meetup to form teams, break the ice, and hear the jam theme reveal the night before!
SHOWCASE YOUR GAME AT LET'S BREAK GAMES!
Want to show off what you've created? Game jam participants will have the opportunity to showcase their games at Let's Break Games the following weekend!
It's a great chance to share your creation with a wider audience, get feedback from fellow game developers and players, and celebrate what you've accomplished during the jam.
Participation in the showcase is completely optional, but we encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity!

FAQ
Q1. What can I expect from the game jam? A game jam is a creative marathon where you will create a game in a weekend. Game jams offer you a chance to push your creativity and practice skills in game development. We will help you find a group and set a theme for everyone to interpret in their own way. For example, a previous year's theme was ‘Connection’. Our game jam is beginner-friendly, catering to individuals with no prior experience (aside from basic computer skills). Q2. Who is welcome? Our focus is reaching out to women and non-binary individuals aged 18 years and above, who might have been discouraged from pursuing their interests in gaming and game development due to societal stereotypes and cultural obstacles in previous generations. We recognize the increasing popularity of gaming and game development, particularly among younger generations, and believe in ensuring equal opportunities for all women and non-binary individuals to get involved in these domains. As such, our event attendance is open to women (cis and trans) and non-binary folks aged 18 years and above. In the future, we may look at expanding this audience. Q3. Can I join the game jam online? Yes! This is primarily an in-person event, but online participation is available for those who are unable to attend the venue. If you're based in or around Perth, we strongly encourage you to join us in person! This year's venue is conveniently located in the Perth CBD, with easy public transport access and paid parking nearby. We'd especially love to see everyone attend Saturday morning for team formation and Sunday afternoon for the final game presentations, even if you choose to work remotely for the rest of the weekend. Being there in person is a great opportunity to meet other participants, get hands-on guidance from mentors, and celebrate everyone's creations! Q4. Do I need to be experienced at game development? People of all experience levels are welcome at this game jam. Our game jam is designed to be beginner-friendly; we have a team of mentors on hand to help you throughout the event. We believe that game development can benefit greatly from people with different perspectives and backgrounds. All you need is creativity and determination (and basic computer skills)! Q5. What do I need for the workshop? We recommend you bring whatever tools you need to make a game. We strongly recommend you bring:
We will provide a list of recommended software closer to the day. This is a pen-and-paper-friendly event! Card and board games are welcome. If you have any further questions, please let us know by emailing hello@levelherup.com.au. |
