Lesbian Film Club Sydney presents: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Description
Lesbian Film Club Sydney is excited to share one of our biggest events to date. Join us on Saturday December 5 from 2:30pm for a picnic in the sunshine at High Cross Park in Randwick, followed by a special private screening of Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019).
Directed by Céline Sciamma, Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Portrait de la jeune fille en feu) is a historical romantic drama set in 19th century France. A young painter, Marianne, is commissioned to paint a portrait of a gentry woman Héloïse, who is to be married off to a nobleman of another family. Héloïse’s mother stresses to Marianne that she has been incredibly difficult, refusing to pose for any portraits. To finish the work she was assigned, Marianne must gain Héloïse’s trust.
The film is described by many as a modern lesbian classic and one of the most fascinating explorations of the female gaze on film. Sciamma tangles together themes of fate, longing, forced expectations and sexual desire with the precision of a surgeon, and basks these complexities in a gorgeous colour grade and score.
Your ticket includes admission to the film screening, which will be screened in French with English subtitles.
