Safe Spaces, Strong Support: Working Effectively with LGBTQ+ Youth
This interactive training is designed to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to create affirming, inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ youth. Participants will explore foundational concepts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE), while gaining insight into the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ youth, including discrimination, trauma, and intersectional barriers. Through guided reflection and practical tools, attendees will learn to foster safe spaces, communicate with cultural competence, and strengthen their role as allies. The session will also highlight key resources and referral options to help connect youth with critical support in mental health, housing, education, and beyond.
Objectives:
Define key concepts related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE), and understand the diversity within LGBTQ+ identities.
Identify common challenges and risk factors faced by LGBTQ+ youth in social service systems, including experiences of discrimination, rejection, and trauma.
Recognize the impact of intersectionality on LGBTQ+ youth, especially for those who also hold marginalized racial, cultural, or religious identities.
Assess the elements of an affirming and safe space for LGBTQ+ youth in both physical environments and interpersonal interactions.
Apply inclusive language and culturally competent communication strategies when engaging with LGBTQ+ youth and their families.
Evaluate their own practices and biases and identify at least two ways to improve inclusivity and allyship in their professional role.
List local or national resources and referral options available to support LGBTQ+ youth in areas such as mental health, housing, and education.
