Liberatory Marketing: A 6-Week Analysis
Description
A 6-week series on marketing for small business owners who want to do business differently
What even is marketing?! At its root it’s communicating: telling people the truth about what you do, building trust over time, paying attention to what folks need, and letting them know you’re here so they can find you when they need what you have.
Corporate marketing is built to get as much profit out of people as possible, and that’s where the pressure, the fake urgency, and the endless content come from. A lot of the advice small businesses get is borrowed from that playbook. We aren’t corporations, and we don’t have to market or sell like them.
Radical, non-traditional small businesses still need people to know they exist.
You can care about more than profit and still need to pay rent and make enough to get by. This series is about holding both of those at once.
You’re a real person trying to be useful to other real people. You’ve probably spent hours making free content on platforms you don’t even like, and most of it never turns into a client. Over six weeks we’ll look at your whole marketing picture, figure out where your energy is already paying off, and build a plan around that. By the end you’ll pick one new channel to try, only if you need one.
Supporting the small businesses in our communities is also a big part of why this matters to me. These are the places and people that make where we live worth living in, and helping them get found is a way of looking after each other.

rough weekly breakdown
Week 1 (Nov 5) — Learning: What's already working
Start with an honest look at where your humans actually come from now. Referrals, existing relationships, word of mouth, past clients — the stuff that's already working, whether or not you've been calling it "marketing."
Week 2 (Nov 12) — Learning: The trust-building channels
Email and your website. The two places you have the most control over the relationship, and the one place potential clients can go to decide if they trust you.
Week 3 (Nov 19) — Integration, no new material
No new content this week. Time to sit with what came up in weeks 1 and 2, apply it to your own business, and bring questions.
Week 4 (Dec 3) — Learning: The visibility channels
SEO and paid ads. What they can be good for, what they're not, and how to use them without turning your whole business into a numbers game.
Week 5 (Dec 10) — Learning: In-person and social
Networking, in-person relationship building, flyers (!!) and the social media conversation — including whether you need to be there, and what it's costing you if you are. This is also where you land on your one new channel, if you're adding one.
Week 6 (Dec 17) — Integration, no new material
No new content. Pull it all together into an actual plan you can use, not a to-do list you'll abandon in January.
Nothing here is a pitch for one kind of marketing. Each week we look at what a channel does, who it tends to reach, what it asks of you, and why you might choose it over another one, so you can decide what makes sense for your business.
