Description
Edinburgh Linux Café is a group of experienced volunteers that want to help people save money - and reduce electronic waste along the way. With the end of support for Windows 10, we want to help people with devices that aren't supported by Windows 11 to move to Linux. Mac OS users can also benefit, with the regular withdrawal of support by Apple for older hardware and Intel processors. This will avoid the need to buy another device, when your current device is perfectly fine!
We can help you:
Try out Linux Mint for the first time without installing anything on your computer
Install Linux Mint if you decide you want it
Install your favourite software and show you how to keep it updated
This is a drop-in event, but we are operating informal time slots to help avoid congestion. Please book a slot below and come along with your laptop or a USB stick. It is very important you back up your files to an external storage beforehand!
Things to bear in mind before the event:
Do backup your personal files
Do bring along your laptop charger
If you aren't able to bring your device (e.g. a desktop computer), please bring an empty USB stick with you so we can put Linux Mint on it for you
Check that you have backed up all the files from your device to external storage

FAQs
- Is Linux Mint easy to use?
It looks very similar to Windows and works much the same way, so if you are used to Windows you will feel right at home. You can try out Mint without installing anything, so if it doesn't work for you, you can stop at any time.
- Can I use Microsoft Word?
Yes. Linux Mint comes with a free version ready to go which can open and save Word files. (No more subscriptions!) If you prefer to keep using Microsoft Word specifically, we can show you how to open it in a browser.
- Is Linux Mint compatible with my existing webcam, mouse, keyboard, home printer and other devices?
Yes, most devices are supported and can be connected using the way you already connect them.
- My computer is a desktop or too heavy to bring to the event. Can I still take part?
Yes. You can have a go using one of our computers. If you bring a USB stick with you, we can put Linux Mint on it for you and show you how to install it at home.
- Does Mint work on Mac hardware?
Yes!
- Do I need to back up my files before attending?
Yes, there isn't time to do it during the event. Please back up all your files to an external drive.
- How can I tell if Linux Mint is compatible with my hardware?
It is compatible with almost every computer built after 2010, and we are happy to check for you at the event. You can read the system requirements on the Mint website: https://www.linuxmint.com/faq.ph
- Can you help me enrol for the additional Windows security updates?
Our group's aim is to empower computer users and promote Linux, so we are unable to offer support for Windows products.
