Event description

A two-storey house, with a soaring roof line (dramatically echoed in the living room fireplace), wide eaves, bold and oversized bargeboards, and splayed brick lower walls with patterned brick columns rising from them: initially the residence of Roy Lippincott (head draughtsman in Walter and Marion's studio) and his wife Genevieve (Walter's sister), with Walter and Marion building their home 'Pholiota' next door. Later it was the home of artist Murray Griffin and his wife Norrie Hinemoa, who knew Walter and Marion.

The house is located on the Glenard Estate, which was designed by Walter to be a residential area with pockets of common land for recreation. Griffin designed the precinct with a curved and flowing layout that followed the contours of the area, with the intent of preserving the mature trees on the site. This approach reflects his interest in the Garden City movement.
