Listening by Moonrise: Maral & SY3
Event description
Clockshop returns with our seasonal program Listening by Moonrise, featuring performances by Los Angeles-based artists Maral and SY3. Maral brings a special set mixing selections from past albums, Ground Groove (2022) and Push (2020), and new singles accompanied by projected visuals by Annapurna Kumar. She samples refrains and rhythms from traditional Iranian music into a soundscape that buzzes in multitudes of dub and shoegaze, replete with moments of setar. SY3 (pronounced “sigh”), a newly formed trio, blurs sounds of 90s Cantopop and trip-hop through layers of vocals, guitar, keys, and bass. Maral and SY3 swim within the melancholia of diaspora, mending the distances of recalled homelands into new vibrations.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Maral’s sonic palette incorporates a collage of Iranian Classical & Folk samples and explores genres of experimental electronic production such as noise, punk/post-punk, and dub. Maral has released two critically acclaimed records, Ground Groove (2022) and Push (2020), on Leaving Records. She has collaborated with artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Panda Bear, Penny Rimbaud of Crass, Anika, and more.
SY3 (pronounced “sigh”) is a new project from LA-based artists Jia Pet, Alex Ho, and Phil Cho. The trio started working on music together in 2023 after connecting over a shared love of Cantonese pop songs from the ‘90s, r&b, and leftfield dance music. A full LP worth of material is in the works, with songs in both English and Chinese.
