AFRICA ELECTRONICA

BELLINGEN MEMORIAL HALL

Friday December 13th

7 pm

Epic night of full powered electronic infused dance music!!

Featuring:

FUTURE ROOTS mash up with SPANKINHIDE

Super phat electronic grooves with epic live African drumming. This collaboration between Zhonu "Nui" Moon of Future Roots and Elliott Orr and the Spankinhide crew will set a new global high for integrating live drumming into DJ tracks.

Who is:

FUTURE ROOTS

Future Roots is the latest project of Zhonu ‘Nui’ Loden Mzali Moon. Zhonu is a renowned percussionist, DJ, and producer, having performed alongside global music icons such as Femi Kuti, Ebo Taylor, Yothu Yindi, Mulatu Astake, Bambino and Carl Cox. With an extensive background in both traditional percussion and electronic music, Zhonu brings a fresh, global perspective to his Future Roots project.

Drawing on his Moroccan/Ghanaian roots and upbringing in Australia and India, Zhonu’s music reflects his travels and deep connections with cultures across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. His work as Future Roots combines live percussion, synths, and Afrobeat-inspired rhythms to create an innovative sound that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Joining forces with:

SPANKINHIDE

Led by highly respected djembe player, teacher and maker, Elliott Orr, Spankinhide has become a much sought-after African rhythm collective, with active members in South East Qld and Northern NSW. Drawing their repertoire from both traditional and contemporary sources, Spankinhide brings a dynamic but decidedly danceable set of rhythms and songs that transform their audience from spectators into a heaving, primal, spontaneous dance floor tribe of wildness!

Recently having played headline shows at the latest Woodford Folk Festival continues their legacy of delivering world class performances. The members of Spankinhide are successful musicians in their own right, including the likes of Tsoof Baras, Adama Doumbouya Fakoly, Peter Teys, Guy Anderton and Charles Wall (aka Bobby Alu).

The very existence of Spankinhide is to fuel the fire of dance. Rich rhythms, driving doundoun melodies, crack and boom to fill the room! If you find you're not dancing, it might be wise to check your pulse - you may be dead!!!

Together, Zhonu and Elliott, are creating a new form of musical expression, combining the ancient power of the African djembe ensemble with the contemporary produced electronic soundscapes available through modern technology. Yes, the addition of improvisational live percussion has already become a regular element within DJ performances, but this collaboration is something so much more; intentional, composed, informed by years of experience and delivered by a level of mastery and skill that is set to clean the floor with your jaw!

Somebody scream!
