Anyone who has ever experienced pain knows the impact it has on our lives – physically, psychologically, spiritually and emotionally. Managing pain is a critical part of the end-of-life journey, but too often pain is not managed well, and people are left suffering unnecessarily.

Join us for an insightful discussion on the importance of pain management in palliative care. With facilitation from Painaustralia Chair, Simon Corbell, our expert panel will discuss the key challenges facing Australians when it comes to effective pain management.

The event will include the launch of Palliative Care Australia’s 2026 – 2029 Strategic Plan and will introduce Senator Kerrynne Liddle and Senator Raff Ciccone, the new co-convenors of the Parliamentary Friends of Palliative Care group.

Panellists:

Simon Corbell is the Chair of Painaustralia. An experienced leader in public policy and governance, he is also the Chair of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and holds a range of board chair and non-executive director positions. Simon previously served as the Deputy Chief Minister, Health Minister and Attorney General among other ministerial portfolios during his term as a member of the ACT Legislative Assembly between 1997 and 2016.
Dr Peter Allcroft is the Chair of Palliative Care Australia. He is a Senior Staff Specialist at Southern Adelaide Palliative Services and is the Clinical Lead for the State Palliative Care Network. He has an interest in models of palliative care for patients with complex chronic medical conditions. He co-founded the Motor Neurone Disease Clinic, which is based at Flinders Medical Centre, and is the Deputy Chair of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of South Australia.
Felicity Bates is a Senior Clinical Pharmacist with the Mid North Coast Local Health District, bringing over a decade of experience in palliative care. She is currently participating in a national pilot program led by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, which integrates pharmacists into community palliative care teams to support medication reviews and patient care in the home setting.
Christine Hofmeyer is a former palliative care nurse consultant with 27 years of experience in clinical practice, service development, and policy at both state and national levels. As a carer and consumer representative, she is passionate about advocating for person-centred care and ensuring that the voices and experiences of consumers and carers inform policy and quality improvements.
