A note from Dr. Armstrong:
On April 22, 1978, the life of my brother, Mike, was taken in a tragic drowning accident, along with his friend, Troy, and two firemen who had tried desperately to rescue them. From the time I began composing professionally in the early 1990s, I envisioned a work that would honor my brother’s memory. With my mom’s death in 2015, it became clear that the real story was one of a mother who had spent nearly four decades grieving for her lost son, all the while holding firm to the promise that she would be reunited with him when God finally called her home. The resulting work is my Requiem for Mother and Child, a work in eight movements for SATB chorus and orchestra, utilizing texts from the traditional Requiem Mass along with verses in English that are personally meaningful.
The work had its world premiere last summer in Ohio, and we are excited to bring it to Iowa this July.
