    The low-waste or ‘natural’ cleaning world is rife with greenwashing and misinformation. Many recipes and products out there cost buckets and are ineffective at best. Lots of it sounds great, but if you’re not careful, you’ll be spending money on packaged products that you could just as easily have replaced with soapy water! Come and join us this Plastic Free July for a workshop that takes you on a deep-dive into the fact and fiction available in the ‘eco-cleaning’ world, with information on how to spot a scam, which ingredients to avoid, and guidance on currently available eco-conscious options, including a recipe for how to make you own waste-conscious, earth-forward cleaning spray at home. Includes practical visual examples; a handy list of questions to assist you make good future decisions, and information about local providers offering low-waste, eco-conscious alternatives to your cleaning needs.   3. Grassy Woodland Walk and Talk - Friday 12 September 10am ticket

    Join council's conservation team for an insightful walk and talk around the Growling Frog Golf Club surrounds. Witness firsthand the incredible transformation brought about by 20 years of dedicated restoration work. Learn how diverse birds, reptiles and mammals have flourished thanks to the reintroduction of native vegetation. We’ll check nest boxes and find out about the mammals and birds that call them home. We'll also discuss the Trust for Nature Covenant currently in progress, a vital step in securing the long-term future of this habitat. We’ll finish off the day with a complimentary coffee from the golf course kiosk. You'll have the opportunity to make a direct contribution to this special place by planting a matted flax-lily, a local threatened species.     Join ecologist Rob Gration on a walk and talk where we hope to trap some bats to identify and release, spotlight some rikali and learn more about our nocturnal natives. All just one night after Halloween! We will set some traps, share a sausage sizzle and learn from Rob before heading out in the dark to check traps and try spotlighting some rikali and hopefully some bats feeding over the water. Date and time: Saturday 1 November 6:30pm - 9:30pm Location: Toorourrong Reservoir Park, 120 Jacks Creek Rd, Clonbinane. *Note - meat and vegetarian sausages will be provided, along with bread and sauce. Experience the panoramic views, picturesque landscapes and the unique biodiversity that this public reserve has to offer. Learn about the history of the local area as well as the current conservation practices aimed at protecting the ecological and cultural values of this evolving and growing 400-hectare parkland which shares a border with five suburbs within the City of Whittlesea. This walk will also highlight Nature connection activities and inspiring discussions that demonstrate how spending meaningful time in Nature strongly supports our physical & mental health which fosters overall well-being while also benefiting the environment and local communities. Date and Time: Sunday 29 March, 10am - 12:30pm. Location: across the road from 60 Mortar Ridge Road, Mernda – the newly opened trail there near the old stables.

Alison is an ecologist, environmental photographer and author and has presented over 850 times in Australia and around the world. This workshop introduces participants to the diversity of the kingdom fungi and the basic principles of fungus identification, including fungi from the various local habitat types and those from further away.
