Living with Misinformation: Book and Guide Launch plus a Media Literacy Showcase

Addressing misinformation can at times feel like an impossible task. While this issue undoubtedly requires a whole-of-society response, one important component of this is to develop citizens’ media literacy – especially the ability to critically analyse digital content.

Over 3 years a team of Australian researchers has worked closely with national cultural institutions to understand and respond to Australians’ everyday experiences with misinformation. 

This event represents the culmination of this collaboration—the project team will launch an open-access scholarly book (published by Routledge) and a practical hands-on guide (co-produced with Tactical Tech). National cultural institutions partners will showcase the resources and projects they have developed as part of the project.

The Living with Misinformation book outlines key research findings based on research with more than 4,400 adult Australians. The authors argue that we need to learn to “live with” misinformation by developing the skills, knowledge and critical thinking that will enable us to make informed decisions about the media and information we encounter online. 

The Living with Misinformation guide is designed for people who want to support their communities to respond to misinformation using a media literacy approach. It includes useful tools, activities, and tips for different stakeholders – including news organisations, schools, libraries, governments, technology companies, researchers and community groups, and individuals.

This event will include:

• An introductory talk from Patrick McIntyre, CEO, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (ALIA).

• A panel discussion with the book and guide authors: Professor Tanya Notley (Western Sydney University), Professor Michael Dezuanni (Queensland University of Technology), Professor Sora Park (University of Canberra), Associate Professor T.J. Thomson (RMIT University), Dr Aimee Hourigan (Queensland University of Technology). Facilitated by Cathie Warburton, CEO, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).

• Showcase displays from the four industry partners will demonstrate how they are addressing misinformation and advancing media literacy in Australia: ABC Education, Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) and National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA).

• Canapes, drinks and networking.
