Local Food Growing & Urban Farming

This is the topic for discussion at the next Sustainability Info Night, hosted by Renew Sydney Central Branch with some great speakers.

In a cost of living and climate crisis, access to good, healthy and affordable food can become critical. Growing food locally in the urban environment is one way to make that happen and to make it accessible.

To celebrate Urban Agriculture Month, come along and listen to our great panel of speakers discuss this and other issues such as …

• what is currently happening around the Sydney area?
• how can people get involved?
• what other opportunities are there?
• what needs to change to make them happen?

There will be time to share ideas and discuss existing projects that people are involved in.

Speakers

Cathy Sherry is a Professor in Macquarie Law School and Executive Member of Smart Green Cities. She is a leading international expert in land law, with a particular focus on high density development. Professor Sherry regularly advises governments, domestically and internationally, on the laws governing multi-owned properties.

As a result of her research on high density development, Professor Sherry has a particular interest in liveable cities, and the importance of green infrastructure, including urban agriculture. She was the founder of UNSW Urban Growers and has created a number of campus food gardens used in conjunction with academic courses, including Food Law.

Daryl Byrne from Field + Fin. Daryl (Daz) Byrne is an urban farmer, conservationist and photographer who has for the past 20 years been creating sustainable green spaces in Sydney and conservation projects in the remote wilderness of Papua New Guinea.Based in Marrickville at his rooftop studio and gardens, Byrne grows food in his aquaponics systems, creates urban green installations and hosts music and food nights around open fires.

Chris Sara, Farm & Community Manager at Pocket City Farms in Camperdown. After studying Biology, Chris first volunteered with Pocket City Farms and quickly took on the role of Sustainability Educator. During 2022 he was part of PCF's first Farm Incubator program and at the end of 2022 took over the role of Farm and Community Manager. Chris is passionate about working alongside communities, schools and businesses to set up and maintain urban farms, food forests, and food gardens to increase urban greening, biodiversity and food security in our cities.
