This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

RUN FOR IT and Not Too Young To have partnered to provide young candidates with the chance to learn from experts in environmental policy!

Hear from incredible speakers:

Cam Klose from Farmers for Climate Action

Cr Jenny O’Connor, Mayor Indigo Shire Council

Adrian Whitehead from Council Action in the Climate Emergency

Tiffany Harrison - First Climate Emergency Officer in the world, currently working in a Melbourne Council

About the event:

Despite climate change being reported as a significant issue by the majority of Australians, particularly young people, national climate change policy in Australia is severely lacking. This inaction is particularly evident when considering that despite the Federal government claiming the Paris targets will be met, their own emissions forecasts show Australia is not on track for meeting its Paris commitments, and the recent announcement that Scott Morrison refuses to commit to net zero emissions target by 2050.

More than 90 per cent of young people say climate change is a very important issue and the vast majority also believe the government isn’t doing enough on climate change. In Australia, nearly 100 Local Councils have declared a Climate Emergency.

With more and more young people running for Local Council this year, we wanted to discuss what role Local Council can play in addressing Climate Change.

This panel will address:

  • What ways can government decisions influence Climate Change?
  • What role does Local Council play in addressing Climate Change?
  • What are examples of recent successes Councils have had when it comes to Climate Change?
  • What practical ways can young candidates consider addressing Climate in their campaigns, and if they are elected?
  • What do practical and realistic commitments to Climate Change look like at a local council level?

The event will be recorded for the general public to access following the event.
