Event description

SDG 1 No Poverty will be the focus goal of this session, with the discussion to look at issues such as universal basic income and what everyone can do individually to eliminate poverty.

We are thrilled that this important discussion will be led by Mary Wooldridge, former Victorian Minister for Mental Health, Community Services, Disability Services & Reform and Women's Affairs.

Mary is now Chair of Global Citizen Australia, an international advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty by 2030.

Our international speaker will be Minna Yikanno. Minna is Head of Research team at Kela. Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland, is a government agency that provides basic economic security for everyone living in Finland.

Dr Jeremy Baskin will then present on the potential application of a universal basic income in Australia before we hear from a Centre representative on the important role houses and centres are playing in reducing the impact of poverty locally.

The houses and centres in focus for this session will be Wellsprings for Women (Victoria) and the Spiers Centre (WA)

Wellsprings for Women

Dalal Smiley, CEO Wellsprings for Women, will talk about the Creative Enterprising Women program - a unique intensive training program for women who have experienced barriers to employment and education such as mothers re-entering the workforce and those experiencing poverty, family violence and mental health issues.

Spiers Centre

CEO Gaelle Gouillou will talk about how they are addressing SDG 1 No Poverty at the Spiers Centre, which has history of nearly 40 years delivering community services including place-based activities, Financial Counselling, Financial Capability and Emergency Relief services to build financial resilience and provide support through financial hardship.

Localising the SDGs: A community led approach to global issues

From September 2020, the Australian Neighbourhood and Community Houses Association and UNAA Victoria are presenting a series of monthly webinars to explore why and how Neighbourhood Houses and Centres can engage with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Each webinar will explore one SDG in depth and include speakers from Neighbourhood Houses and Centres already working to progress this Goal.
