Event description

The SDG in focus for this session will be SDG 5 Gender Equality, with the focus on domestic and family violence. Domestic violence can take many forms, but 1 in 4 women will experience physical violence by their intimate partner at some point during their lifetimes.

This session, our guest speaker is Gabrielle Williams, Victorian Minister for Women, Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

Minister Williams, a passionate advocate for equity and social inclusion, became a Minister in 2018 after previously serving as a Parliamentary Secretary for Carers and Volunteers.

Minister Williams will be joined by Tanja Kovac, CEO, Gender Equity Victoria,
Victoria's peak organisation for women's health, equality and violence prevention.

Tanja is an advocate for gender equality and a policy leader with decades of experience working in government, law and the non-profit sector. She was previously Chief of Staff to the late Fiona Richardson MP, Australia’s first family violence prevention minister where she was involved in delivering family violence reform and creating Victoria’s first Gender Equality Strategy.

Localising the SDGs: A community led approach to global issues

From September 2020, the Australian Neighbourhood and Community Houses Association and UNAA Victoria are presenting a series of monthly webinars to explore why and how Neighbourhood Houses and Centres can engage with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Each webinar will explore one SDG in depth and include speakers from Neighbourhood Houses and Centres already working to progress this Goal.
