LOU'ANA (NZ)
“Sometimes a voice can just stop you in your tracks. This is the effect Samoan/NZ singer and
musician Lou'ana had on us. With a bewitching stage presence and a gorgeous hold on soul/funk
and pop music”
- Sose Fuamoli, ABC Radio Australia (2024)
Excerpt from Music NZ about Lou'ana and her current latest release...
The free-spirited, eclectic sound of Auckland, based artist, vocalist and singer-songwriter Lou’ana (Whitney) is one of unparalleled magic. Having carved a place for herself within Auckland’s vibrant music community over the past 6 years as a proud, second generation Samoan New Zealander, Lou’ana’s voice carries the stature of an old soul; a cosmic cocktail of sweet and soulful, with an added gritty, blues edge that references the golden age of Etta James, Emmylou Harris to the rawness of Stevie Nicks and Amy Winehouse. Her heart and soul translates through sound, in that unexplainable alchemy that happens when music meets word.
Incorporating Lou’ana’s signature essence of liberation and empowerment, My World invites her audience to embrace their wildest dreams with her smooth, jazz-trained vocals paired with a primal drum motif to create an irresistibly dance-inducing slice of nu-disco pop.
“My World invites you to fantasize about what you want for yourself, or step into my world to explore how it feels; perhaps inspiring you to take steps toward your true self,” says Lou’ana. “Whether it’s a new beginning, a continuation of your journey, or simply a relatable vibe, it’s perfect for any moment when you want to connect with your body. Whether it’s in the
morning to get your energy flowing or under the moonlight for a cathartic solo dance, it’s there to help you move, feel, and release.”
Co-written and produced by Lou’ana and Nathan Judd, the track was then mastered by Vivek Gabriel. “This song went through so many rewrites to get it just right,” Lou’ana explains. “I kept refining the verses and chorus bit by bit until they clicked. It’s completely different to how it started! One beautiful morning, I was blasting the fun groovy house disco outro part in my kitchen, riffing on melodies and lyrics, when I started dancing and singing, “Step forward, not back, step into my world.” It felt so fun I could see myself singing and dancing to it with a crowd! I can’t wait to make this happen!”
Accompanying the single today is the visualiser and lyric video – shot on film camera. Directed by Katya Brook, it visually showcases the essence of the song in grounded yet playful; feeling sensual, glittery, fun, glamorous, and earthy all at once.
“For me, creating it was an opportunity to explore different facets of myself,” reflects Lou’ana. “I hope it inspires others to do the same – whatever that looks like for them.”
