Music has had a central place at Sydney Grammar School since the early 1970s, when Alastair Mackerras was Headmaster. The Music Department has grown to become one of the largest and most active in the country, with more than 40 ensembles including symphony orchestras, concert bands, choirs, jazz bands, many chamber ensembles and some 550 individual instrumental lessons taught on campus every week. Organ has been taught at Grammar since 1995, originally on the historic Walcker organ in St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Stanley St, until 2004 when a new organ was built for the school by Mander Organs of London. More than 50 Grammar boys have learned organ in that time, including St James’ current Organ Scholar, James Brew.
