Event description

Embark on a natural dyeing journey with madder, an ancient natural red dye from the root of the plant Rubia cordifolia. Using a little chemistry and perhaps a touch of magic, you will create for yourself a beautiful plant printed silk scarf. This workshop focuses on a technique called discharge dyeing. This involves dyeing the scarf a deep red colour, then stripping away the dyes using naturally occurring acid in plants. You'll learn how to prepare the fabric for uptake of madder dye, careful selection of appropriate plants and the use of a hot bundle process to trigger the discharge process. Participants need to bring a variety of leaves to the workshop. Rubber gloves, a notebook and pen are useful too, but not essential. A blank silk scarf, madder dye, equipment, tutoring and gluten free morning tea are provided. Please note this venue is not wheelchair accessible.
