Event description

Irish-born, Naarm/Melbourne-based singer and banjo player Maggie Carty returns to Sydney’s Gaelic Club on Saturday, 30 August for a powerful full-band performance launching her debut album Ebb and Flow  in the very venue where her Australian musical journey first began.

In 2017, Maggie was musician-in-residence at the Irish National Association/Gaelic Club, where she gave her first Australian performance. Now, eight years later, it is only fitting that she returns to this iconic stage to launch Ebb and Flow,  a celebration of her time living and creating music in Australia, and of all the songs, stories, and traditions she has absorbed and transformed along the way.

Ebb and Flow is a deeply personal musical journey shaped by the currents of emigration, heritage, longing, and transformation. The album title reflects the rhythms of Maggie’s family’s journey, waves of movement between Ireland and Australia, and the ongoing dance between homeland and new horizons. Her playing is not confined by strict patterns but moves with a natural pulse and flexibility, breathing new life into Irish traditional music through fresh arrangements and contemporary influences from Americana, Australian folk, and beyond.

Drawing on her family lineage and rich personal experience, Maggie’s debut fuses heartfelt vocals, driving banjo, and a powerhouse band featuring guitar, double bass, and percussion, delivering songs that honour the past while embracing new musical paths.

Since relocating to Naarm/Melbourne in 2017, Maggie has become a recognised voice in Australia’s folk scene, performing at festivals including Port Fairy, Woodford, and the National Folk Festival. This Sydney show is a key stop on her national tour: Ebb and Flow: Songlines of the Diaspora supported by Culture Ireland, which will see her perform across every state and territory between August and October 2025.

Join Maggie for a dynamic performance filled with musical intensity, soulful narratives, and a blending of traditions - returning to where it all began to share her evolving musical story. Book now!
