FAQs
- What types of Mahjong do you teach?
At all public general admission events, we teach Hong Kong style mahjong.
If you want to play your own style of mahjong, we welcome you to bring your own set to play! However, we will only teach Hong Kong style mahjong.
For private events, we can teach American, Hong Kong, or Taiwanese style mahjong.
- I've never played mahjong before, can I come to your events?
Yes!
We are teaching mahjong for beginners at all events currently.
If this changes, we will indicate on our advertising or the FAQ page.
- Is there an age requirement at your events?
Many of the events I host are at locations that serve alcohol; however, most of these locations do not require you to be 21+ to attend the event.
If you are looking for more family friendly or alcohol free options, look out for events during the day time, at bookstores, or in public space like a museum, night market, or the New Haven Green.
- Can I buy tickets at the door?
Not all events require tickets or tickets purchased in advance.
However, for events that sell tickets in advance, if there are still tickets available, you can buy them at the door for a $5 up charge per ticket.
We recommend purchasing tickets in advance when this option is available.
- What do I need to bring to a mahjong event?
Yourself!
Sets, mats, and instructions are provided, but if you want to bring your own set, feel free!
- What is your refund policy?
Because I use Humanitix as my ticketing platform, refunds are issued through their website.
The current policy is that you can receive a 75% refund up to a week in advance.
We will also refund you if the event is canceled due to weather.
- What is Hong Kong Style Points Mahjong? / What is Intermediate level Mahjong?
If you have been playing Hong Kong style mahjong with 4 sets of three and a pair and feel pretty confident, then it's time to learn the next level of the game!
This beginner mahjong hand that you've been playing is what we call the "Common Hand" or "Chicken Scratch."
To level up, we start off by teaching what we call "baby points," and slowly introduce the 3 point hands that you can play. From there, it's time to practice and as you get the hang of it, you'll learn bigger point hands, and how to score yourself!
