Make It Official: Building Design (Interior) Registration Course

Big changes are coming for Victorian interior designers. Let's make it official.

From 31 March 2027, preparing plans and specifications will no longer fall within the definition of domestic building work in Victoria. Design becomes a standalone service, contracted directly with your client. If you currently document work under a builder's registration, that arrangement will not carry over. You will need Building Design (Interior) registration with the Building and Plumbing Commission (BPC) in your own right.

Fewer than five per cent of Victoria's interior designers hold this registration today.

Make It Official is a four-session online course from the Design Institute of Australia, developed and presented in collaboration with Carole Whiting, Director, Studio Whiting.

Who it's for

• Designers who currently document projects under a builder's or another designer's registration in Victoria

• Practice principals and managers planning registration for their staff

The sessions
All sessions run online on Thursdays, 6.00-8.00pm AEDT

• Session 1, 15 October: The Starting Block. What the registration covers, why it matters now, and the path to get there.

• Session 2, 22 October: The Meat. Qualifications, experience, technical referees, the portfolio of evidence, the exam and the interview.

• Session 3, 29 October: The Roadblocks. Where applications get stuck and what to do about it.

• Session 4, 22 November: The Submission. Completing and lodging your application.
