Event description

MAKING BOTANICAL ART MATERIALS
with Wild Studio.

Wild Studio is the art and research practice of Emma Cowan and Sarah Nicholson. Their work reconnects the process of art making to the places and lives that we already inhabit, utilitising materials that can be grown or foraged to create vibrant paints, inks, glues, as well as effective drawing and painting tools.

In this hands-on workshop from Wild Studio, you will discover the possibilities for making your own art materials, and come away with tools and painting media that you have made yourself, as well as the knowledge to continue further explorations and experiments at home.

You will learn how to make artist's drawing charcoal sticks, which woods work well, how to prepare them, and how to make a simple charcoal kiln. You will then be guided through the process to make your own rich black inks for drawing and lettering, and learn the different ways that these inks can be used. With foraged materials, we will craft simple and effective dip pens, that can be styled to suit many nib types for script or line drawings.

Wild Studio will share with you their research into the possibilities for extracting beautiful, vibrant hues from common plants and weeds, and take you through the process from start to finish. You will make your own coloured painting inks (similar to liquid watercolours) to take home.

This is a practical workshop suitable for all levels of experience. Ages 12+

Tickets include:
Morning tea and all materials required for the day are provided. Students will also take home artists' charcoal, carbon black ink, 3x coloured inks, and the dip pen they have made.
