Makenu Cumbia is an Arcata‑based, eight-piece “psychedelic cumbia” collective that reimagines traditional cumbia with an electrifying blend of ska, hip‑hop, rock, and tropical psychedelia. Since forming in Humboldt County in 2021, the ensemble—comprised of musicians from Chile, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, and California—has been on a mission to redefine the cumbia experience. Their performances are immersive, vibrant celebrations that dissolve the line between listener and participant, inviting the audience to dance, move, and become part of the rhythm. Described as “not just a band, but a rhythmic celebration,” Makenu’s shows breathe life into the soul of every listener and transcend cultural and musical borders.
