Making Dumplings: beyond the family table
Description
Can Food Be Queer? Join Yurong (Zena) Tong, a PhD researcher in Creative Arts at Massey University, for a creative dumpling-making workshop! Through making dumplings together, we will explore the connections between food, identity, memory, and belonging.
The workshop will begin with a family dumpling recipe that carries both warmth and complicated memories. We will bring together our own ingredients, stories, and ways of making.
Guests are invited to bring one ingredient they personally associate with queerness. It could be connected to a personal memory, identity, feeling, or experience.
Together, we will experiment with different ingredients, fold dumplings, and share food, exploring how familiar food-making practices might take on new meanings through collective making.
This workshop is open to women only and centres women's experiences. We particularly welcome women with Asian diasporic backgrounds, queer experiences, or an interest in culture, identity, and food memories.
Participants do not need to identify with all of these backgrounds or experiences, and no prior dumpling-making experience is required.
Sharing personal stories is entirely optional.
